Barn Conversions
In recent years Antony has carried out several large barn conversions.
Barns and conversion of old properties bring with them a host of challenges which aren't always appreciated. For example, older buildings will tend not have damp proofing and often won't have foundations. They generally won't be level and are almost never square or have walls plumb. This can give the builder many challenges as the building is brought up to the specification required by modern building regulations. These challenges will always test the ingenuity and experience of the builder.
The photos and video on this page are all taken from a barn conversion started in late 2006. The barn which was derelict and condemned has been restored and extended and has also been equipped with water storage, treatment and collection tanks as it no mains water or sewage.
The Start

The rear wall was badly damaged and had to be removed to make way for the full length extension to the rear of the property. Planning restrictions meant the roof could not be altered so to achieve the correct pitch the floor needed to be lowered. With no foundations to existing walls a large amount of underpinning was required.
The extension was built and the old roof replaced in green oak as this structure will be on display. The floors were excavated and reconstructed with damp proofing and insulation. The exterior walls were underpinned and work started on cladding the new structure in stone.
